Filming in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park is in the southwestern part of Rwanda close to Burundi and DR Congo. The park boasts of great diversity with over 1000 plant species, 85 mammals, 38 reptiles, 120 butterfly species, and 300 birds including 29 endemic species. Nyungwe forest has a high concentration of chimpanzees making it one of the best places to film chimpanzees. Filming in Nyungwe Forest National Park will give you an opportunity to shoot chimpanzees in their natural habitat and large troops of white and black Colobus monkeys.
What to film in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park chimpanzee population is second highest in Africa after Kibale Forest National Park filming in this park will give you an opportunity to shoot chimpanzees in large groups as they swing in trees and mother chimps cuddling the baby chimps. For you to film Chimpanzees at this par, you will need to secure a chimpanzee permit from Rwanda Development Board on top of covering other requirements for filming in Rwanda.
Birds in Nyungwe Forest
Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the best places to film birds. the park is home to over 300 bird species including 29 Albertine endemic species, these include the Great Blue Turaco, Red-Breasted Sparrow Hawk, White-headed Wood Hoopoe, the Re-Throated Alethe, the Paradise Flycatcher, and the Gigantic Forest Hornbill, Green Pigeons, Ross’s Turaco, Francolin, Rwenzori Turaco, Red-Faced Woodland Warbler, the purple breasted and the blue-headed sunbird, the Rockefeller’s Sunbird, Ruwenzori Batis, Stripe-Breasted Tit, Collared Apalis, Mountain Masked Apalis, and the Regal Sunbird.
The Canopy walk
The Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest is a 3-hour thriller on a 200 meters long trail located 50 meters above the forest cover. This one of the most amazing attractions to film in this park the view at the top of the trees gives you the eagle’s eyesight of the forest you will as well have an opportunity to see various primates as they swing in the trees and different birds.
How to get to Nyungwe Forest National Park
The park can be accessed by road, you will drive south from Kigali via Lake Kivu proceed south to Nyungwe National Park. The distance from Kigali to Nyungwe National Park is approximately 225 kilometers which will take you 4 to 5 hours’ drive to get to the park by road.
By Air: RwandAir offers domestic flights with 9 flights a week from Kigali to Kamembe International Airport which is just 32km from Nyungwe Forest National Park. This is the faster means of transport to get to the park. You will need to be picked up from the airport and transferred to the lodge with this you need to book your transfer in advance with your operator.
Best time to film in Nyungwe forest National Park
Filming in Nyungwe Forest National Park is done throughout the year and the best time is during June, July, and August every year during this time the fig trees have fruits that primates feed on commonly and this makes finding them easy.

Requirements and permissions for filming in Nyungwe Forest NP
You will need to get a filming permit for you to be allowed to film in Nyungwe Forest National Park. Rwanda filming permits are issued by the Ministry of Sports and Culture. Filming permits can be secured directly by contacting this ministry. Film Fixers Uganda can assist you to do all the ground processes to secure for you the Rwanda Filming permits. Filming permits in Rwanda cost $30 valid for 15 Days and $50 valid for 3 Days the permit is strictly issued by the Rwanda Academy of Language and Culture. Then your filming equipment will also need to be cleared with customs at the point of entry in Rwanda. Rwanda Press Accreditation
After securing the Rwanda Filming permits for filming in Rwanda, all film crew members must have press Accreditation from the Rwanda Media High Council to be allowed to film in Nyungwe Forest National Park. For you to get the press accreditation in Rwanda you will be required to fill in the Rwanda Press Accreditation Application Form (Which we normally send to you) with all details and then attached the following;
- Official letter requesting for accreditation addressed to the Executive Secretary
- Two colored passport size photographs
- A copy of your passport
- A copy of visa except for those who come from countries that benefit from the Rwanda Visa Waiver For example From the East African Community member states, USA, COMESA Member states among others contact us here for more details
- A copy of a press card from your country of origin
- A receipt of Payment from the Rwanda Revenue Authority
- List of Filming equipment and kits to be used during your shoot
On top of this, we will need a letter from the filming company detailing who they are, why they are filming, where they will be filming, and details of crew members on this shoot. We will attach this letter to all details provided and send them to Rwanda Media High Council for press accreditation. This takes 2-3 working days for the press accreditation cards to be ready.
For you to secure the Rwanda Press Accreditation you are required to pay as follows to Rwanda Revenue Authority depending on the length of your shoot in Rwanda;
- $30 Press Accreditation Card valid for 01 to 15 days
- $50 Press Accreditation Card valid for 15 days to 30 days
- $100 Press Accreditation Card valid for 1 to 3 months
- $200 Press Accreditation Card valid for 3 to 6 months
- $300 Press Accreditation Card valid for 6 months to 1 year

Rwanda Visa Advice
You will need to purchase a Tourist or Business visa for you to get into Rwanda for Filming. Many film crews prefer getting their visas before they come to Rwanda but visas can be obtained easily upon arrival at any entry point and in this case Kigali International Airport upon paying either USD50.00 for Tourist Visa you will get it immediately. Rwanda Vehicle Hire Services

For rough terrains, like in National Parks, we recommend Customized 4×4 Land Cruisers which costs from USD200-250 per vehicle per day with Driver/Fixer or 4×4 Safari Vans from USD200 per Van per day with driver/Fixer.
